How big can my hand luggage be with Eurowings? And what's actually included in the cheap BASIC fare? Eurowings has adjusted its rules several times in recent years – since switching to the new fare system, the BASIC fare only includes one small item of baggage measuring 40 × 30 × 25 cm free of charge. Anyone wanting to bring the classic cabin trolley has to pay extra for it. In our guide, you'll find all the current Eurowings hand luggage rules 2026, the differences between BASIC, SMART and BIZclass, the costs for extra luggage, as well as the new rules for power banks and e-cigarettes that have also applied to Eurowings since January 2026.
Eurowings hand luggage 2026 – the rules at a glance
Eurowings offers three main fares: BASIC (cheapest), SMART (incl. checked baggage) and BIZclass (business-like). Hand luggage allowances vary generously depending on the fare – if you're flying BASIC only, you should calculate carefully whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
1. The small item of baggage – included in every fare
In every Eurowings fare, you're allowed to bring one small personal item on board free of charge. This must fit under the seat in front of you:
- Dimensions: 40 × 30 × 25 cm
- Weight: comfortably liftable (no fixed weight limit)
- Storage: under the seat in front
- Typical examples: compact backpacks, laptop bags, small shoulder bags
- Suitable options: underseater bags, small backpacks or small shoulder bags
The 40 × 30 × 25 cm format is somewhat deeper than Ryanair's (40 × 30 × 20 cm) – so with Eurowings you can use a slightly more voluminous underseater bag.
2. The large hand luggage item – only with SMART or BIZclass
Anyone wanting to bring the classic cabin trolley needs either a fare upgrade or has to add it separately in the BASIC fare:
- Dimensions: 55 × 40 × 23 cm
- Weight: max. 8 kg
- Storage: in the overhead locker
- Cost in the BASIC fare: from €21 per route (when added online)
- Suitable options: cabin cases in 55 × 40 × 20–23 cm, cabin backpacks or travel bags
Important: In the BASIC fare, you're not automatically allowed to bring a cabin trolley. Either you pay from €21 extra for the trolley (significantly cheaper online than at the airport) or you book the SMART fare directly, which includes the trolley.

Money-saving tip: From 2 people onwards, it's often worth going straight for the SMART fare or a shared 23 kg checked bag in BASIC. The SMART ticket includes a trolley and 23 kg of checked baggage – compare the surcharge with the individual prices in BASIC.
Excess weight & extra costs
If your suitcase is heavier than allowed or exceeds the dimensions, Eurowings charges you extra:
- Excess baggage at the airport: €15 per additional kilo and item of baggage
- Bulky baggage up to 23 kg: costs the regular price of a 23 kg item of baggage
- Booking extra at the airport: significantly more expensive – according to Eurowings, you save up to 50% online
- Absolute upper limit: 32 kg per suitcase
New rules 2026: power banks and e-cigarettes
As part of the Lufthansa Group, since 15 January 2026 Eurowings has applied the same tightened rules for lithium batteries as Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines:
- Max. 2 power banks per person
- Power banks must be stored on your body or under the seat in front
- Use on board prohibited: neither power banks nor e-cigarettes may be charged or used
- Checked baggage: power banks and e-cigarettes are generally prohibited there
- Wh limits: up to 100 Wh allowed, 100–160 Wh only with airline approval, over 160 Wh completely prohibited
Background: The Lufthansa Group has standardised these rules across the group for safety reasons; they are based on the recommendations of EASA, FAA, IATA and ICAO.
Liquids in Eurowings hand luggage
As with all airlines in Europe, Eurowings follows the EU-wide liquid rules:
- Individual containers of a maximum of 100 ml
- All containers together in one transparent 1-litre resealable bag
- Maximum one bag per person
- Must be removed separately from hand luggage at the security check
At airports with modern CT scanners, you're allowed to bring containers up to 2 litres: in Frankfurt at most checkpoints in Terminal 1 and all in Terminal 3, in Munich at all checkpoints since 18 September 2026. You'll find all the details and current airports in our liquids in hand luggage guide. You'll find the right flight bags in our shop.

Which suitcase fits Eurowings hand luggage?
For Eurowings, we recommend one of the following luggage types depending on the type of trip and fare:
- BASIC fare (short trip, 1–2 nights): underseater bags or small backpacks in 40 × 30 × 25 cm
- SMART/BIZclass (weekend, 3–5 days): hand luggage suitcases in 55 × 40 × 23 cm
- Backpack fan: cabin backpacks from Eastpak, Osprey or Samsonite
- Soft-sided bag: travel bags in hand luggage format – more flexible, often lighter
- Business trip: business trolleys with laptop compartment
- Long holiday: suitcases & trolleys for the 23 kg checked baggage
5 money-saving tips for your Eurowings hand luggage
- Calculate trolley costs in advance: In the BASIC fare, the 55 × 40 × 23 cm trolley costs from €21 per route. For a return flight, that's at least €42 – the SMART fare additionally includes 23 kg of checked baggage – compare the surcharge.
- Online instead of at the airport: According to Eurowings, you save up to 50% online compared to booking extra at the airport. You can add baggage online up to two hours before departure.
- Pack your small item of baggage smartly: 40 × 30 × 25 cm is enough for 1–2 nights away. A compact backpack with a laptop compartment makes perfect use of the volume.
- Choose a lightweight suitcase: every kilo of empty weight counts towards the 8 kg limit. Modern trolleys often weigh under 2.5 kg.
- Factor in gate checks: Eurowings checks the size and number of hand luggage items before departure. A 55 × 40 × 20 cm suitcase is safer than a 55 × 40 × 23 cm model that's right at the edge of the limit.
