Few backpack brands have shaped the school and university corridors of the past 40 years like Eastpak. If you went to school with a Padded Pak'r in the 90s, you know that feeling: robust, laid-back, indestructible. To this day, Eastpak stands for exactly that – with the famous slogan "Built to Resist" and a warranty that's unrivalled in the industry: 30 years on material and manufacturing defects. In this guide, we'll explain which Eastpak models are available, which one suits your daily routine – whether school, university, work or travel – and what you should consider when buying.
Updated: 27th April 2026 · Model availability and colour options at Eastpak change seasonally. Warranty terms can be found at eastpak.com, our Eastpak range in the Eastpak Collection.
What makes Eastpak so special?
Eastpak is no fashion fad. The brand was founded in 1952 in Newton, Massachusetts as Eastern Canvas Products and initially supplied the US Army with backpacks and equipment. It wasn't until 1976 that the company presented its first consumer collection at a sportswear trade fair in Chicago – and became market leader on US college campuses within a few years. In 1985, Eastpak launched the first coloured models and definitively developed into a lifestyle brand. Today, Eastpak belongs to VF Corporation and is available in over 50 countries.
Built to Resist – since 1952. Eastpak was the first luggage brand to offer a lifetime warranty. For legal reasons, it's now limited to 30 years – more than any other backpack brand on the market. The slogan isn't just marketing, but a product promise.
The 30-year warranty explained
The Eastpak warranty is legendary – but not everyone knows exactly what it covers. We'll clarify the fine print:
| What's covered | What's NOT covered |
|---|---|
| Material and manufacturing defects | Normal wear and tear from use |
| Burst seams and incorrectly cut fabric | Water and heat damage |
| Defective zips due to material faults | Damage from improper use |
| Faulty buckles or straps | Damage from excessive or unusual loading |
The warranty period is stated on the care label inside your backpack – even without a receipt you can claim the warranty as long as the label is legible. The first two years fall under EU statutory warranty, from the 3rd year onwards the Eastpak warranty kicks in and runs until your backpack's 30th birthday. Defective models are usually repaired or replaced free of charge – repair requests are handled via eastpak.com/warranty.

The Eastpak classics in detail
Padded Pak'r – the all-round classic
If you had to name one Eastpak, it would be this: The Padded Pak'r has been the brand's best-selling backpack for decades. Robust 600D polyester, padded shoulder straps, a large main compartment with organiser front pocket – perfect for school, university and the commute to work. Available in over 50 colours and prints. Our recommendation if you're looking for an uncomplicated daypack without bells and whistles.
Wyoming – daypack with leather base
The Wyoming looks like the Padded Pak'r but has a leather base – making it slightly more elegant and particularly hard-wearing if you often put it down. Popular at universities and in city life. Volume identical to the Padded Pak'r, but the look and feel is significantly more "grown-up".
Out Of Office – the laptop daypack
The Out Of Office is Eastpak's answer to modern commuter and university life: padded laptop compartment for 13" devices, two separate main compartments, neatly organised small item pockets and a discreet look that also works in the office. If you carry a laptop or tablet daily, it's the best choice among Eastpak's daypacks.
Pinnacle – more volume for weekends and hiking
The Pinnacle is almost twice as large at 38 litres as the Padded Pak'r – ideal if you regularly carry more equipment: change of clothes for the gym, food for day hiking, stacks of books or even cabin luggage on the plane. More on backpack sizes in our hiking backpack sizing guide.
Tranverz S/M/L – the wheeled travel bag
The Tranverz series is Eastpak's bestseller in the travel luggage segment. Three sizes cover everything – the Tranverz S meets the cabin dimensions of most airlines (51 × 33 × 23 cm), the M is the typical choice for 1-2 weeks' holiday, the L for long trips. Advantage over hard shell suitcases: significantly lighter, more flexible when packing and unmistakable with classic Eastpak designs. If you want to know which size suits your trip, our suitcase sizing guide helps.
Which Eastpak for whom?
For school
For the classic school backpack from secondary school onwards, the Padded Pak'r (24 L) or Wyoming is the first choice. Both have the main compartment for A4 folders and padded shoulder straps – but no ergonomic carrying system like a traditional school satchel. For primary school children, we clearly recommend an ergonomic school satchel – more on this in our school satchel guide.
For university and studies
At university, the Out Of Office (27 L) is the smartest choice: padded laptop compartment, two main compartments for books and spare clothes, carry handle for the train. If you carry a lot of sports gear, the Pinnacle with 38 L is worthwhile.
For office and commuting
At work, Out Of Office and Provider (33 L) are the best choices. Both have padded laptop compartments, the Provider even for 15" laptops. The subdued colours (Black, Triple Denim) look business-appropriate.
For travel
Here it depends on trip duration: Weekend → Pinnacle 38 L or Carry Pack 53 L. Backpacking → Carry Pack 53 L (with hip belt and front-loader opening like classic travel backpacks). Traditional holiday → Tranverz M on wheels. Family holiday → Tranverz L. For hard shell alternatives, it's worth comparing with our hardshell vs soft guide.
Material and care
Most Eastpak models are made from 600D polyester – a robust, slightly abrasion-resistant fabric that lasts for years. Premium lines (Provider, Out Of Office Premium) often use more durable 1680D Cordura. The zips are usually YKK quality.
Cleaning: Eastpak backpacks are not suitable for the washing machine. Remove stubborn stains with lukewarm water and mild soap by hand, leave to air dry – never put in the tumble dryer. The shoulder straps and padding can't handle the spin cycle. More detail in our backpack cleaning guide.
Eastpak vs. the competition
Eastpak has strong competitors – and each brand has its strengths:
- vs. Herschel: Herschel is more design-oriented (striped lining, classic camp look), Eastpak more robust and with longer warranty. More in the Herschel range.
- vs. Fjällräven Kånken: The Kånken is the outdoor classic with smaller size (16-20 L) and Vinylon F material. Eastpak is cheaper, larger, more everyday-suitable.
- vs. Satch: Satch is an ergonomic school backpack with carrying system – better than Eastpak for primary and middle school. Details in the Satch guide.
- vs. Adidas/Nike: Sports backpacks are often cheaper but thinner construction. Eastpak usually lasts significantly longer.
How much does an Eastpak backpack cost?
Eastpak sits in the mid-price segment: Padded Pak'r from around £40, Wyoming from around £50, Out Of Office from around £60, Pinnacle from around £65. Premium models (Provider, Carry Pack) are £70-85, the Tranverz trolleys between £110 (S) and £195 (L). Special editions and limited drops are more expensive. In sale promotions, the classics are often 30-40% reduced – so it's worth checking our Eastpak Collection.
Frequently asked questions about Eastpak
How long does an Eastpak backpack really last?
With normal use, 10-15 years is completely realistic. The 30-year warranty covers material and manufacturing defects – not natural wear and tear. Anyone who treats their Eastpak carefully has a good chance it will outlive the warranty.
Which Eastpak is the largest backpack?
In the daypack segment, the Pinnacle with 38 litres is the largest. For travel backpacks, the Carry Pack leads with 53 litres. If you need even more storage space, go for the Tranverz wheeled travel bags with up to 121 litres.
Are Eastpak backpacks waterproof?
No, Eastpak backpacks are not waterproof, but water-resistant. No problem in light rain – in heavy rain or downpours, contents would get damp. A separate rain cover makes sense if you're travelling in outdoor areas.
Which Eastpak fits as hand luggage on planes?
Padded Pak'r (24 L), Wyoming (24 L), Out Of Office (27 L) and Pinnacle (38 L) all fit the standard cabin dimensions of most airlines (55×40×23 cm). In the Tranverz series, the S version (51 cm) is cabin-suitable. The exact rules per airline can be found in our hand luggage guides for Lufthansa, Ryanair and Eurowings.
Can I wash an Eastpak in the washing machine?
No, this is not recommended. Shoulder straps, padding and zips won't withstand the spin cycle long-term. Better: clean by hand with lukewarm water and mild soap and leave to air dry.
How is the Eastpak warranty claimed?
Via the warranty form at eastpak.com/de-de/warranty. You need photos of the defect and to state whether you'd contribute to repair costs (often free, in special cases with own contribution). Also possible without receipt as long as the care label inside is still legible.
Conclusion: Which Eastpak is right for you?
Eastpak is one of the few brands you buy once and that can really accompany you for decades. The Padded Pak'r is and remains the classic for school and daily use – those who transport laptops are better served with the Out Of Office – and for travel there's hardly a way around the Tranverz trolley series. We've prepared the entire Eastpak range in our Eastpak Collection for you – over 200 models in all colours and sizes.
