How large can my hand luggage be with Eurowings? And what's actually included in the budget BASIC fare? Eurowings has adjusted the rules several times in recent years – since switching to the new fare system, only a small item measuring 40 × 30 × 25 cm is free in the BASIC fare. Passengers wanting to bring the classic cabin trolley need to pay extra. Our guide covers all current Eurowings hand luggage rules 2026, the differences between BASIC, SMART and BIZclass, costs for additional luggage, plus the new power bank and e-cigarette rules that apply to Eurowings from January 2026.
Eurowings Hand Luggage 2026 – Rules at a Glance
Eurowings offers three main fares: BASIC (cheapest), SMART (includes checked luggage) and BIZclass (business-style). Hand luggage allowances vary by fare – passengers flying BASIC only should calculate whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
1. Small Personal Item – Included in Every Fare
With every Eurowings fare you can bring one small personal item on board free of charge. This must fit under the seat in front:
- Dimensions: 40 × 30 × 25 cm (including wheels, handles, external pockets)
- Weight: comfortable to carry (no fixed weight limit)
- Storage: under the seat in front
- Typical items: compact backpacks, laptop bags, small handbags
- Perfect for this: Underseater bags, small backpacks or small shoulder bags
The 40 × 30 × 25 cm format is slightly deeper than Ryanair (40 × 30 × 20 cm) – so you can use a somewhat more voluminous underseater with Eurowings.
2. Large Hand Luggage Item – Only with SMART or BIZclass
Passengers wanting to bring the classic cabin trolley need either a fare upgrade or must book it separately in BASIC fare:
- Dimensions: 55 × 40 × 23 cm
- Weight: max. 8 kg
- Storage: in the overhead compartment above your seat
- Cost in BASIC fare: from £8 per sector (when booking online)
- Perfect for this: Cabin suitcases in 55 × 40 × 20–23 cm, cabin backpacks or travel bags
Important: In BASIC fare you cannot automatically bring a cabin trolley – Eurowings changed the rules in 2023. Either pay from £8 for the trolley (online much cheaper than at the airport) or book SMART fare directly, which includes the trolley.

Checked Luggage with Eurowings 2026
Passengers needing to pack more have several options:
- BASIC fare: 1 checked bag up to 23 kg from £12 online
- SMART fare: 1 checked bag up to 23 kg included
- BIZclass fare: 2 checked bags of 32 kg each included
- Additional checked luggage: from approx. £20 per piece online
- Maximum dimensions: 158 cm (width + height + depth)
- Absolute maximum: 32 kg per piece of luggage
Money-saving tip: For 2+ people, SMART fare or shared 23 kg checked bag in BASIC often makes sense. A SMART ticket is usually only £20–40 more than BASIC, but includes trolley + 23 kg checked + liquid allowance.
Excess Weight & Extra Costs
If your suitcase is heavier than permitted or exceeds the dimensions, you'll pay extra with Eurowings:
- Excess weight (23–32 kg in Economy): from approx. £40–60 per sector
- Oversize (over 158 cm total): treated as special luggage, from approx. £50
- Booking at airport: significantly more expensive than online (+£15–25)
- Absolute limit: 32 kg per suitcase (health & safety)
New Rules 2026: Power Banks and E-Cigarettes
As part of the Lufthansa Group, Eurowings has applied the same tightened lithium battery rules as Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines since 15th January 2026:
- Max. 2 power banks per person (previously up to 20)
- Power banks must be carried on your person or under the seat in front
- Use on board prohibited: Neither power banks nor e-cigarettes may be charged or used
- Checked luggage: Power banks and e-cigarettes are completely banned there
- Wh limits: up to 100 Wh permitted, 100–160 Wh only with airline approval, over 160 Wh completely banned
Background: Following several fires from overheated batteries in overhead bins, the Lufthansa Group (including Eurowings) has standardised the rules group-wide. Violations are sanctioned at the gate.
Liquids in Eurowings Hand Luggage
Eurowings follows the same EU-wide liquid rules as all European airlines:
- Individual containers with maximum 100 ml
- All containers together in one transparent 1-litre clear bag
- Maximum one bag per person
- Remove separately from hand luggage at security control
At airports with modern CT scanners (Frankfurt, Munich) you can now carry up to 2 litres at certain security lanes. All details and current airports can be found in our liquids hand luggage guide. Find the perfect flight bag in our shop.

Which Suitcase Fits Eurowings Hand Luggage?
For Eurowings we recommend one of the following luggage types depending on your trip and fare:
- BASIC fare (short trip, 1–2 nights): Underseater bags or small backpacks in 40 × 30 × 25 cm
- SMART/BIZclass (weekend, 3–5 days): Hand luggage suitcases in 55 × 40 × 23 cm
- Backpack lover: Cabin backpacks from Eastpak, Osprey or Samsonite
- Soft bag: Travel bags in hand luggage format – more flexible, often lighter
- Business trip: Business trolleys with laptop compartment
- Long holiday: Suitcases & Trolleys for 23 kg checked luggage
5 Money-Saving Tips for Your Eurowings Hand Luggage
- Calculate trolley costs in advance: In BASIC fare, the 55 × 40 × 23 cm trolley costs from £8 per sector. For return flights that's £16 – SMART fare is often only £20–40 more and includes an additional 23 kg checked bag.
- Online not at airport: Extra luggage at the airport usually costs £15–25 more. Better to book directly when purchasing or up to 6 hours before departure online.
- Pack small item smartly: 40 × 30 × 25 cm is enough for 1–2 nights. A compact backpack with laptop compartment uses the volume perfectly.
- Choose lightweight suitcase: Every kilo of empty weight counts against the 8 kg limit. Modern trolleys often weigh under 2.5 kg.
- Factor in gate checks: Eurowings checks dimensions and weight at the gate on full flights. A 55 × 40 × 20 cm suitcase is safer than a 55 × 40 × 23 cm one that's borderline.
